Album tracklist
  • 1.
    Soaring Birds-Main Track-
    03:16
[SCORE: Animated Bluebirds & Princesses] [PLAYFUL / CELEBRATORY / JOYFUL] Happier than the happiest of happy! Supersaturated colors, shimmering rainbows, chirping bluebirds and nuzzling kittens. This excessively optimistic cut evokes the fairy tale ending and/or beginning of so many animated features. A wondrous fanfare welcomes us to the kingdom of dreams, and the main theme enters @:15. The piece takes a goofy turn @:46 as we see fashion-challenged mice / bluebirds / cute insects ineffectually try to help a princess dress herself. The piece frolics along with bouncy strings and bells from 1:45 to 2:25 when the theme returns even bigger than before, with a big finish around 3:09. Great for weddings and parodies.
  • 2.
    Rainbows and Valleys-Main Track-
    02:07
[SCORE: Animated Bluebirds & Princesses] [WARM, SWEET / ROMANTIC] Lush, pastoral beauty. The opening string and wind trills conjure up rays of sunlight, a waking forest, and a princess contentedly looking out her tower window over her domain. An angelic choir, in @:32, sweetens things up even more. A piano and guitar breakdown @1:33 changes the piece into something more reflective, as our heroine turns from the window and sits in front of the mirror, speaking softly to herself. Useful for nostalgia, reflection and for establishing goodness and decency.
  • 3.
Attack of the Evil Witch-Main Track-
    01:49
[SCORE: Animated Bluebirds & Princesses] [FRENETIC CHASE / DANGER -> BUILDING TENSION] Fast-paced cartoon peril and action. Breakneck violin runs announce something bad is coming way too quickly. Frenetic and flowing percussion (in @:13) is joined by a big choir (in @:24) to create the impression of danger rapidly coursing toward tons of cute furry creatures. It takes a pause @:34 until a series of hits and percussive flourishes announce tension @:45. Gets most furious @1:27 with the choir, strings and percussion all going at full-throttle. Useful for chases, action, and any kind of animated danger.
  • 4.
    Frolicking Bunnies-Main Track-
    01:38
[SCORE: Animated Bluebirds & Princesses] [PLAYFUL, LIGHT ACTIVITY -> PROUD CELEBRATION] The title pretty much nails it - this track always reminds me of bunnies in tutus doing ballet in a field. Bouncy violins, prancing bassoons and twirling flutes complete the sonic picture of animated escapades. A choir joins in @:48 for an overload of wholesome goodness. Gets bigger sounding around 1:12, then gently winds down. Great for animation, animal ballet and wacky parody.
  • 5.
    Princess Lament-Main Track-
    03:05
[SCORE: Animated Bluebirds & Princesses] [ROMANTIC LOSS / TRAGEDY] Royal sadness and longing. This would be the scene when the princess cries softly into a lake because she thinks the prince is forever encased in stone / imprisoned / playing for the other team. Harp "tears" dripping and plaintive strings tug at your heartstrings, then yank harder @:34 when a bell and cymbal wash introduce a choir of sorrow. The sadness gets almost epic @1:43 with another wash and string swell. Ends quietly if you're going the subtle route, but we give you a bonus string swell (starting @2:48) that can be pasted where you need it for big endings/flourishes.
  • 6.
    Princess Wedding-Main Track-
    01:39
[SCORE: Animated Bluebirds & Princesses] [PASTORAL BEAUTY -> PROUD CELEBRATION] She's getting married! And he's Jewish! After a softly romantic setup, the trumpets and flutes come blaring in @:21, announcing something stupidly happy. After the heraldic grand announcement, the main theme enters as our Princess, now arm in arm with the Prince, glides around while birds sing, bunnies hop and squirrels do whatever it is that squirrels do. Another fanfare section begins @:49 merging everything together.
  • 7.
    Refugees-Main Track-
    02:21
[SCORE: Dark Futures] [ATMOSPHERIC PULSING -> INDUSTRIOUS MOVEMENT] Haunting beauty and sadness yields to inspiration. Minor-key pulsing layers of orchestra, choir and electronics create an air of longing. A hopeful violin enters @:50 lifting and shifting the piece towards the postitive. By 1:20, we're feeling that powerful forces have gathered at our back and that we're being inexorably pushed forward. Sine wave and string layers add an epic scope to the piece, climaxing @1:52. Good for turning sadness to hope, sophisticated dramas, image pieces.
  • 8.
    Quiet City-Main Track-
    02:40
[SCORE: Dark Futures] [SAD BEAUTY -> REDEMPTION] The commonplace becomes the strange. A flutter of woodwinds suggests an industrious city laden with an air of despair and futility. Gentle pools of winds and brass calm you while a plaintive, but dignified, trumpet melody enters @:42. Strings enter in layers until 1:46, when a more insistent motion hints at darker events to come, while an emotional, magical moment @2:08 reveals a future full of hope and promise. Trumpet section is good for military / memorials without being too maudlin, while later sections are useful for historical dramas with modern twist. Good for slower footage and aerial shots.
  • 9.
    Fallout-Main Track-
    01:30
[SCORE: Dark Futures] [TENSE / OMINOUS PULSING WITH BUILDS] The nature of the danger is revealed. Low brass clusters joined by atonal strings and a scraped piano create an air of impending conflict or menace. Percussion (in @:16) heightens the tension. Great swells @:40 and especially the long build to 1:12 provide highly dramatic moments perfect for uncovering the face of a formerly-friendly informant, or pulling back to an aerial view of a devastated landscape. Dramatic, slow fade of cut is visually suggestive of long dissolves or intentional blurring.
  • 10.
    Unanswered Questions-Main Track-
    02:32
[SCORE: Dark Futures] [HEARTBEAT-LIKE SUSPENSE / MYSTERY] Mysterious machinations. Deep, dark electronic beating / bass ostinatos open the piece, and are joined by low bells and an english horn (@:25). Cluster chord @:40 provides an added element of tension and mystery. Strings then flow steadily underneath, while a deliberately out-of-tune piano enters @1:20 creating another layer of drama. Continues on the path of ever-increasing drama without ever becoming huge or having a big payoff. This piece describes the rough beginnings of an organized global effort to pinpoint the cause of the "Event" and refashion society. Good for intrigue, mystery and revealing questionable motives with uncertain outcomes.
  • 11.
    Smoke in the Distance-Main Track-
    03:12
[SCORE: Dark Futures] [INFORMATIONAL PULSE -> DRAMATIC] We've happened upon bad circumstances, but are unable to fully understand them. String washes and bass ostinato create an impression of difficult options being weighed with imperfect information. It's more nostalgic from :41 to 1:02, then gets more serious. Becomes weightier and more emotional as the piece develops, while big hits @2:28 and 2:35 signal that the die has been cast and destiny awaits.
  • 12.
    Possibility of Hope-Main Track-
    02:31
[SCORE: Dark Futures] [THOUGHTFUL ACTIVITY -> POWER / TRIUMPH] Powerful, ultimately soaring triumph of the human spirit. Starts quietly intense, with notes of sorrow and hope winding in and out. Soft, unobtrusive electronics underneath keep it just modern enough. Choir (@:42) begins the transformation to the soaring, almost magical work it develops into. A dramatic pause @1:37 perfectly sets up the towering, moving conclusion and provides an edit point to jump right to the big stuff. Great for overcoming obstacles and victories of the spirit.
  • 13.
    Scientific Method-Main Track-
    02:24
[SCORE: Man v. Science Episode 74] [ACTIVE, MYSTERIOUS BED -> AGGRESSIVE ACTION] The show open. Intriguing / inquisitive music with a modern feel and a surprisingly Rocked-up section in the middle. Questioning vibes and visually-inspiring hits set up the problem, giving way to a cool beddier section @:30 with fast rhythm and slide guitar. Big hits @1:13 send us in to a fury of knowledge-seeking. This is where to put that montage of all the dangerous situations the actors have gotten themselves into. Chills back out again @1:42. Ends big with a series of forceful stings @2:16. Good for science, mysteries, procedurals, and guys in lab coats hanging off of cliffs.
  • 14.
    Agitated State-Main Track-
    01:52
[SCORE: Man v. Science Episode 74] [TENSE ACTIVITY -> SUSPENSEFUL ATMOSPHERICS] Dark and menacing with a clinical edge. Think procedural investigations with a gritty vibe or a mystery that refuses to reveal itself. Lots of variation throughout the piece provides tons of different sections to edit with. A swirling mixture of piano, drums and synths slowly sheds layers until basically only the piano remains by :22. @:26 a meaner, darker, section enters with bashing drums and sinister undercurrents. @:52, the heaviness recedes leaving a solo piano and murky pads alone in the night. A massive whoosh begins @1:14, swells to a big hit @1:17, and introduces the climactic final build. Good for crime scenes, investigations, darker mysteries and general violence.
  • 15.
    Conflicting Evidence-Main Track-
    01:49
[SCORE: Man v. Science Episode 74] [MYSTERIOUS ACTIVITY -> TENSE AGGRESSION] Threatening and complex, with multiple layers of conflicting information. Imagine a secret agent receiving six different stories from six different sources and only one will result in him not getting killed. Starts ill-boding and dark, but then changes into a much more neutral section @:22 with a reduction of elements. Becomes sharper and more dramatic @:39. The hero takes decisive action @1:17 with heavy guitars and explosive drums. Works for espionage, investigations, and scientific conclusions that aren't happy endings. Lots of dynamics and breaks make this cut edit-friendly.
  • 16.
    Trial and Error-Main Track-
    02:23
[SCORE: Man v. Science Episode 74] [MATHEMATICAL ACTIVITY / TIME PASSING] Organic problem-solving evocative of a methodical mind at work. Neutral, circular, afro-influenced guitar figures intertwine with light percussion as someone works on a solution. Understated and logical with flowing undercurrents. Starts small and precise, gradually adding and subtracting layers according to the progress or regression being made. Big hit @1:04 leads into a slightly tense bed that conjures up a visual display of the inner thought process. Eureka moment happens @1:36 when all the pieces come together. A sonic representation of a fact-finding mission.
  • 17.
    Chemicals of Change-Main Track-
    02:06
[SCORE: Man v. Science Episode 74] [DRAMATIC / POSITIVE MOTION WITH TENSE ACCENTS] Science gets funky. An initial hit gives way to a bubbling bed of clavs that eventually boils over @:30 with drum beat and tabla hits. Gets even peppier and more positive @:45 with a driving bass line and larger drum bangs. Cool bass break @:58 sets up another building section. Becomes an information bed @1:14, until 1:44 when it breaks loose again, delivering 100 lbs of science to your door in a fun box. Useful mainly as a positive informational delivery system for news, technology, corporate, science and business.
  • 18.
    Informational Velocity-Main Track-
    02:05
[SCORE: Man v. Science Episode 74] [NEUTRAL MOVEMENT -> AGGRESSIVE ATTITUDE] It's modern rock meets igneous rock as fast-paced activity and action combine in just the right formula. Opens with a neutral electric guitar figure and ticking synths, then kicks in big @:26 with a monster riff and big beats. Good drum break @:41. Shifts to a lower gear @1:01, but maintains forward momentum coming back even bigger @1:27 and plowing through right to the last big hit @1:52. Sounds like the scores to The Fast and Furious, Tokyo Drift and Gone in 60 Seconds. Use it for chases / pursuit, technology, fast motional shots, corporate, investigations and making anything informational seem more exciting than it really is.
  • 19.
    Good Gatherings-Main Track-
    03:31
[SCORE: Year In Conflict] [ATMOSPHERIC WARMTH -> ACTIVITY] NPR-/PBS-esque score that's warm, emotional and pensive with layered undercurrents. Starts pretty and reserved with bass and guitar pads, joined by light percussion and guitar chords @:29. Another layer of guitars and percussion enters @:52 and intensifies the emotion until @1:20. Then, the piece takes a new turn, with a beautiful trumpet melody and fingerpicked electric guitar. The main theme returns @2:05. Could be used for generally happy family gatherings, displays of caring, and thoughtful image campaigns.
  • 20.
    Through the Valleys-Main Track-
    03:07
[SCORE: Year In Conflict] [ACOUSTIC GUITAR-DRIVEN TENSE MOVEMENT / ACTION] Driving guitars and assertive percussion create a feeling of being uncontrollably pulled towards a violent ending. Fiercely strummed acoustic guitars fight with unrestrained electrics and a heavily processed trumpet. Takes a breather @:30 with a deliberately thin-sounding solo electric guitar. Another violent section starts @1:17 with a trumpet shriek in the distance as the guitars and noises keep up their onslaught. @1:48, a pause in the cacophony provides some respite, but by 2:18 the driving motion resumes and careens toward another climax @2:49. Determined and rough-around-the-edges. Great for showing the effects of a mind under a series of great stresses.
  • 21.
    Visions of Earth-Main Track-
    02:17
[SCORE: Year In Conflict] [ATMOSPHERIC MYSTERY / TIME PASSING] Provides a backdrop for global concerns and/or mysteries. Beginning seriously with non-specific acoustic guitar strumming, wind noises and guitar pads, this track has moments of organic harmony and disharmony. Drops to solo piano @1:38, then is supported by trumpet and emotional string pads that bring a newfound warmth to the cut. Feels somewhat like the scores to Jarhead, Road to Perdition and Mark Isham's Bobby. Slow tempoed and subdued, this cut could be a great PSA, with plenty of space for potent images to register. Would work well for issues like poverty relief, clean water access, climate change / global warming, etc.
  • 22.
    The Love We Knew-Main Track-
    02:35
[SCORE: Year In Conflict] [ATMOSPHERIC WARMTH -> POSITIVITY] Reflective warmth, loneliness and emotion with an indie sensibility. Layers of tremolo'd and ebowed guitars gently fold over each other as we look back upon a series of complicated shared experiences. A delayed trumpet enters @:45, followed by gentle percussion, all building to a climax @1:25. Provides a modern and not-too-sentimental take on nostalgia and love. Also good for PSAs, community-centered productions and creating warm feelings without being sappy.
  • 23.
    Emotional Battlefield-Main Track-
    02:35
[SCORE: Year In Conflict] [ANTICIPATION ->TRIPPY MOTION -> WARM ATMOSPHERICS] A unique take on conflict from inside the human mind. Divided into four sections, each piece of the cut represents a different experience of conflict from the soldier's perspective. Ebowed guitars and mandolin create a building sense of anticipation which concludes in a hit @:23. A trumpet, representing a chance for honor, enters @:36 then is replaced @:47 by churning, searing guitars and heavier drums as the soldier disappears into the battle. A pause in the action @1:35 provides room for reflection until we jump back into the fray @2:05 with the entrance of plodding drums. Good for expressing conflict in a non-traditional way.
  • 24.
    Ships in the Sand-Main Track-
    02:15
[SCORE: Pirates Of Arabia] [ATMOSPHERIC SUSPENSE -> PROUD / TENSE MOVEMENT] You're about to embark on a legendary journey. So legendary it can only be described as legendary. Low strings, drum accents and metallic washes form a bed while a shakuhachi-esque flute blows, creating a feeling of forthcoming danger and adventure. Percussion @:26 leads to an insistent marCato (ASCAP) string figure that gets going around :43. Meaty horns lend a great scope and gravity to the track. Breaks down with more flute blows @1:09, but maintains tension and flowing rhythm until the end. Useful for aerial shots, adventure, Middle Eastern drama and legendary legends.
  • 25.
    Conspiracy and Attack-Main Track-
    02:06
[SCORE: Pirates Of Arabia] [BUILDING SUSPENSE -> CONFLICT] Someone's plotting something violent. Interweaving strings, unobtrusive sine wave pulses and percussion start low. Flute @34 provides a dramatic accent or transition opportunity. Overblown flute hit @:55 is another good accent, indicating that something bad is on the move. Big hits @1:14 announce a more active and intense section that builds steadily to a climax @1:59. First half is good for establishing light tension or plotting activities, while the second half is useful as an updated take on swords and sandals.
  • 26.
    Desert Passage-Main Track-
    02:30
[SCORE: Pirates Of Arabia] [PROUD, SWELLING PERCUSSIVE BED] Classic "crossing the Sahara" music. You can practically see the towering red dunes and feel the sandy grit in your teeth as Middle Eastern strings, oud, flutes and large percussion place you alone in the desert, miles from civilization. This track slowly ebbs and flows while an oud breakdown @1:22 provides useful relief. Ends with a big drum hit @2:03 while the flutes and strings trail off hazily.
  • 27.
    Between God and Man-Main Track-
    02:26
[SCORE: Pirates Of Arabia] [MAJESTIC, PULSING -> ATMOSPHERIC MYSTERY] Timeless, cinematic epicosity. Sweeping strings, sensitive horns, a supporting cast of percussion and even a choir (in @:52) tell a story of a love kept alive, though all hope seems lost. Gets more tender around 1:05. Swelling strings lead to the final repetition of the theme @1:47. Perfect for superimposing or alternating close-ups of the hero / heroine with the global events that conspired to keep them apart.
  • 28.
    Water Flower-Main Track-
    02:41
[SCORE: Pirates Of Arabia] [TRANQUIL, SAD / SOMBER] Delicate, sensual romance. Lush and luscious with violins, flutes, and harps all working together to set a seductive, relaxing mood. Evocative of tranquil water gardens at night, shadowy silhouetted figures, or ECUs of various indistinguishable body parts mingling in vaguely naughty ways. Gets bigger around 1:23 with the violins playing the theme more strongly, until 2:21 when the piece recedes to the gentle tones of a flute. Could be used for anything romantic, establishing tranquility or non-sleazy eroticism.
  • 29.
    Pirates of Arabia-Main Track-
    02:42
[SCORE: Pirates Of Arabia] [OVER-THE-TOP ACTION / PRIDE] Holy swords and sandals! This almost-a-parody-of-itself gladiatorial track puts you right in the middle of an ancient Roman or Greek rumble. Takes a twist @:37 followed by a great series of hits starting @:44, which lead to more action and pummeling. Valiant-sounding finish starting around 2:12. This one's big and brash, but generally not-too-threatening, making much of this piece good for kid's stuff or animation. Also useful for contests, gladiators, pirates or heroic puppies. Or gladiator-pirate-puppies.
  • 30.
    A Hope Restored-Main Track-
    03:07
[SCORE: Pirates Of Arabia] [SOFT WARMTH -> PRIDE] The emotional finale. The end begins with valedictory horns and strings leading to an optimistic melody in @:23. @:51 yearning strings provide reflection upon all that was lost along the way, while a transition to solo winds by 1:32 shows what was gained. Becomes increasingly brighter through the 2:08 mark when everything starts swelling like crazy to a big payoff @2:14 - followed by an even bigger one @2:31 - as the huge scale of the journey hits home. The piece draws softly to a close as we fade out. Good for happy endings. Except that kind. Pervert.
